Students Score Big on Match Day

Match Day is greeted with relief by most fourth-year students, who take comfort in the knowledge that they’ll have a place to start their careers after graduation.
“It feels really good to be almost done,’’ said Paul Redpath, who matched with his first choice, Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, where he’ll do a general practice residency.
At a Match Day ceremony held last month, Dean Feldman announced that 90 percent of RSDM students seeking a match had found one, compared to the national average of 67 percent.“This just continues to reinforce recognition of the quality of our students and the quality of a Rutgers education,’’ said Feldman.
Nearby stood two maps, one of the U.S. and one of New Jersey. Students placed pins in the location where they’ll be residents. Most will be working in New Jersey or New York, but some will be going as far away as Illinois.
They described what they hoped to learn from their residencies. “I’d like to do more root canals and be able to place an implant,’’ said Redpath.
“I’m looking forward to getting a variety of patients,’’ said Jessica Senat, who’ll also be going to Montefiore. “We’ll be exposed to medically complex cases, so that will prepare me for when I’m working in a private practice.”
