For Student, Dental Mission to the Dominican Republic Leaves Lasting Imprint

Tiffany Yau will never forget the 14-year-old patient whose front teeth were fractured by physical abuse. They met during RSDM’s annual dental mission to the Dominican village of La Romana. “Most of the time, these types of injuries are sports-related but hers happened when she had an object thrown at her face,’’ Yau recalls. “I really wanted to do right by her and give her a smile that would help erase that.”

For Scholarship Challenge, Faculty Chooses the Best Time to Give

Dr. Eileen Hoskin and her husband Dr. Craig Hirschberg are both RSDM faculty and alumni who met as RSDM students and later married. Hoskin is an assistant professor in the Department of Restorative Dentistry and Hirschberg is Chair of the Department of Endodontics. Hoskin explained why the couple established the Eileen R. Hoskin D.M.D. and Craig S. Hirschberg D.D.S. Endowed Scholarship for an incoming student.

Becoming a professional dentist requires much more than a DMD. Treating patients and colleagues with integrity, respect and sensitivity are also part of the job. As recipients of this year’s Professionalism Scholarship, endowed by the Alumni and Friends of RSDM, fourth-year students Michael DePaolo and Benjamin Paulussen were selected as early adapters when it comes to forging career success.
