Student’s Work On New Implant Method Wins $100,000 Grant

A postgraduate student’s s proposed alternative to titanium dental implants was awarded $100,000 from Rutgers University Tech Advance, which funds research for potential commercial development. Dr. Amir Fakhrzadeh, a resident in the Periodontics Department, has designed a method of replacing teeth with a composite biomaterial of cement mixed with patient dentin, which mimics natural teeth.

Patient Finds Relief from Severe Gum Recession, Tooth Pain

Mary Lynn Schmidt was self-conscious about her receding gumline, which was so advanced in one spot that the root of her tooth was exposed. Even worse was her chronic and severe toothache, the result of an undiagnosed nerve disorder worsened by a botched filling. Both problems were solved at RSDM’s faculty practice, Rutgers Health University Dental Associates.

Student Writes Epic Ode to Dentistry and the Human Spirit

Karim Elmorshedy finds poetry in enamel and pulp, dental fissures and occlusion. He transformed it into an epic verse entitled, “Be Like a Tooth, My Friend,” which equates a tooth’s strength and weaknesses to challenges in life that must be overcome.
