Stage Set for South American Exchange Program

South American experts in orofacial pain learned about RSDM’s internationally recognized work in the field during a visit last month, where they also planted the seeds for an exchange program between RSDM and a university in Chile.

Drs. Rodrigo Cassasus and Carolina Diaz, who head the orofacial pain program at the Universidad Desarrollo, explored RSDM’s Orofacial Pain Center, which is well-known for its diagnosis of nerve  disorders and complex cases, among other areas of expertise.

“The program here is also very strong in neuropathic headaches," said Cassasus. "They are very well-known for that. The experience and knowledge is something that we hope will encich our program and our care at home.''

In contrast, the Universidad is especially well-regarded for its work with TMJ and the relationship between sleep disorders and pain, said Cassasus.

“There’s a direct link between sleep and pain. In the past five years, there’s been a lot of data. For instance, if a patient has reduced REM sleep, they’re going to be hypersensitive to pain,’’ said Cassasus. “When you have a patient with chronic pain, it’s the duty of an orofacial pain specialist or dentist to explore sleep.”

Some time this year, RSDM students will travel to Chile, a group that will most likely be comprised of two post graduates and two undergraduates, said Dr. Herminio Perez, director of Student and Multicultural Affairs. Students from Chile are expected to visit RSDM next year, too.

In addition to learning about dental school in Chile and research at the Universidad, students will also learn about Chilean culture and oral health treatment. "This is also about exploring how healthcare is delivered in other parts of the world,'' said Perez.
