Three Long-Time Faculty Retire: Drs. Robert Binder, Rufus Caine, and Lawrence Schneider

Three long-time faculty have announced their retirement. The RSDM community expresses sincere gratitude and wishes them well.

Dr. Robert Binder

Dr. Robert Binder served several times as chair or interim chair of the Department of Orthodontics during his more than 50-year-career at the dental school before retiring this month.

His first appointment as chair began in 1973, and several times when called upon, he served as acting and interim chair.
“Whenever there was a need, Rob stepped up to play a crucial role for the department of the school,’’ stated Dean Cecile A. Feldman. “He has remained an invaluable asset to the Orthodontic Department, to RSDM and to me personally for the past eight years.”

After stepping down as Interim Chair in 2011, Dr. Binder remained on the faculty and devoted himself to educating undergraduate students in pediatric dentistry and as orthodontic residents.

He received his DMD degree from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, where he also competed his training in orthodontics in 1969, when he joined the faculty of RSDM.

During his distinguished career, he has served on most of the major committees of RSDM and has also served as President of the Hudson County Dental Society, the New Jersey Society of Orthodontists and The Middle Atlantic Society of Orthodontists. He is a member of the Eastern Component of the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists and served as its president in 2000-2001.
He is the author of over 50 scientific articles and teaching manuals in peer reviewed scientific books and journals and has presented his work at scientific meetings both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Rufus L. Caine, Jr.

Dr. Rufus Caine Jr. of the Department of Diagnostic Science retired from RSDM last month.
A faculty member since he joined RSDM in 1974, Dr. Caine also served as an Associate Professor in the Department of Dental Public Health in the Rutgers University School of Public Health since 1999.
Dr. Caine earned his DDS from Meharry Medical College, School of Dentistry in Nashville Tennessee in 1972 and went on to earn a Master’s degree in Dental Public Health from the University of Michigan, School of Public Health two years later.
At RSDM, he began his career in the Department of Community Dentistry and then became a member of the Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology.
Dr. Caine taught in the Division of Treatment Planning and Oral Diagnosis and served on a multitude of committees at RSDM and the School of Public Health. He was an active member of the American Association of Dental Research and the International Association of Dental Research.
Twice he received the Excellence in Teaching Award from the School of Public Health, as well as RSDM and Commonwealth and the Keeping the Dream Alive Award from Newark’s city council, RSDM and NJDA.

Dr. Lawrence Schneider

Dr. Lawrence Schneider, a faculty in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences, retired last month.
Arriving at New Jersey Medical School in 1968, he was first appointed as Assistant Professor in the Department of Anatomy In 1972, he became a member of the Department of Pathology, a forerunner of the Department of Diagnostic Sciences at New Jersey Dental School.
Dr. Schneider earned his BDS from London University in 1961 and was awarded his PhD in Pathology from Northwestern University in 1968.
Over the years at RSDM, he directed and lectured in all Division of Oral Pathology courses. As a participant in RSDM’s Biopsy Service, he provided timely and accurate diagnoses of lesions for both patients of the school and practitioners in the surrounding communities.
He is well-known in the state’s organized dentistry community for his Oral Pathology Quizzes published regularly in the Journal of the New Jersey Dental Association (NJDA). He has published a number of scientific articles and is an author of many abstracts that have been presented at scientific meetings over the years.
