Kearny High School student Allison Campos already has one prerequisite for the dental profession.

“I like teeth,’’ she declared during lunch break at RSDM’s Decision for Dentistry program.

For many high schoolers, dentistry might not be the first career that springs to mind when they consider a future in healthcare.

But for kids who like science and enjoy working with their hands, it’s a great option, says Rosa Chaviano, Assistant Dean of Admissions and Student Recruitment. “We’re planting the seeds for them to start thinking about it,’’ she added.

Decision for Dentistry helps teens learn more about the world of dental medicine and gives them real-life advice on the best ways to prepare for dental school during high school and college. “It’s not just about exposing them to the profession but what they need to do in order to prepare themselves to become competitive candidates,’’ Chaviano explained.

It also lets them sample hands-on skills, like making a dental impression.

Another important aspect of the program is mentorship. Participants observe RSDM students in the clinic, chat over lunch and keep in touch after the program is over. “Our students get to be role models,’’ says Chaviano. “It’s empowering for them, too.’’
